First Global Estimate of Cetacean Bycatch
Nearly 1,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises drown every day when they become entangled in fishing gear, according to a study submitted in June 2003 to the International Whaling Commission. The research, conducted at the Duke University Marine Laboratory and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, is the first global estimate ever of cetacean deaths from entanglement in fishing gear.
